Enrolment

Pre-Enrolment

If your child will be attending Banks Avenue School please check with the office that you live in our zone. If you do, we ask that you fill in a pre-enrolment form up to a year before they are due to start. This helps us to plan staffing and classes.

Enrolment Zone
As part of the process for our new school build on the Shirley Boys's High School site our Enrolment Scheme has been reviewed by the Ministry of Education.
Below are the links to our new school zone map and home zone description.  This was approved by the Ministry of Education on 16 May 2016 and was adopted by our Board of Trustees at its meeting on 31 May 2018.  This Enrolment Scheme comes into effect three months after the date it was adopted by the Board, which is 31 August 2018.

Enrolment

Two-three months before your child is due to start please ring the office and make an appointment with the Deputy Principal. At this time you will be asked to fill in the formal enrolment form. You will need to bring a birth certificate, passport or Plunket book to verify your child's date of birth. Please also bring your child's immunisation record. We like children to be present at this appointment.

If your child has special educational or behavioural needs please contact us at least 6 months before they are due to start. This allows us to plan a successful transition to school.

Pre-Entry Visits

Children will have two morning pre-entry visits. A letter will be sent to your child, (with an enclosed letter for you), explaining these visits. The first visit is until 12:30pm and the second visit until 1:30pm.

Finishing Time for New Entrants

When children start school parents are asked to choose one of the following options:
  • 3pm finish from the beginning
  • 2pm finish for six weeks or
  • 2pm finish for three weeks

The class teacher will discuss your child's needs and these options with you. There is an OSCAR programme on site which offers before and after school care.

New Entrant Parent Meetings

If your pre-enrolment form has been received, you will be invited to a meeting for parents where you will find out exactly what your child's needs and how you can help prepare him/her for school. At the meeting you can meet the New Entrants teacher and visit a class in action. You will also be able to meet some of the other parents who have children starting around the same time.

The most important thing you can do to help your child succeed at school is to send us a child who has great self-esteem and a 'can do' attitude. These attitudes are far more important than academic skills. Other things you can do to prepare your child are all the things they do at pre-school, the early counting and fun with numbers, reading to your child, listening to them and giving them a variety of experiences.

Please bring your child's pre-school portfolio. This gives us valuable information about your child and their early learning.
