At Banks Avenue School we show H.E.A.R.T by being a caring, learning community where positive behaviours and respectful relationships are valued.  We nurture lifelong learning in order for all of us to thrive.

2020 - Student Leaders of HEART

At the end of 2019 the search was on for two Year 5 students that always show and promote our HEART values to be Student Leaders of HEART for 2020.This is a new student leader position in the school.  Congratulations to Sofia and Makayla!

2019 - The Introduction of HEART Badges

It is fantastic to see so many of our children walking around with black wrist bands . To receive a black wristband, you have need to gain 50 tokens in for each value of HEART and then another 50 in any value on the top. Phew! Children with black bands are now working towards earning their HEART badge. To do this they have to earn another 50 tokens in each value of HEART!  Click here to see which children have already earnt their HEART badge.

2017 - HEART Wristbands

This year we introduce the HEART wristbands. Children are given tokens for showing any of our HEART Values, hauora, excellence, aroha, respect and togetherness.

When a child receives:
  • 25 tokens their name goes on the website and in the newsletter.
  • 50 tokens in one value they receive a wristband.

The tokens are collated into House Groups. The winning house group - (the house that has received the most heart tokens) will be announced at every school assembly.

In 2015 we consulted with our students, our staff and our parent community about what values were the most important for our children. After collating all this information the acronym HEART was decided upon to represent the values we all think are the most important to have.

  • Hauora - We will strive to optimise our emotional, social and physical wellbeing. This is valuing hauora.
  • Excellence - We will always strive to do our best. This is showing excellence.
  • Aroha - We will use kind words and kind actions. This is showing aroha.
  • Respect - We will treat other children, adults, the environment and property in a thoughtful manner. This is showing respect.
  • Togetherness - We will fully participate in activities, acting and being collaborative in group, team and class tasks. This is showing togetherness.

We believe that these values will help develop and define our school culture. They are an integral part of teaching and learning and we begin 2016 with every learning space (classroom) valuing, developing and celebrating HEART. The values are being encouraged and explored throughout the school in a range of contexts.

Our HEART Logo

After many drafts, we are very happy to announce that the design for our HEART values has been finalised. What do you think? The design was based on the themes that come through from the children's HEART design competition (see below). They wanted the logo to be heart shaped and to include a koru in the design. As you can see the children's wishes have came true. The green colour and blue wording represent our school colours and of course we have our traditional school logo in the centre. Soon you will see this design throughout the school. We would love to hear what you think. Just type into the box below to share your thoughts.

Celebrating HEART

Some of the ways in which we have begun the year celebrating HEART are:
  • Students are given HEART tokens when they show any of our values. Five tokens are drawn from our HEART bucket each week and these students shine on the 'Home' page of our website.
  • HEART Certificates are given out in school-wide assemblies rewarding the students that are using our HEART values the best.
  • Two HEART celebration afternoons are held each term to reward and show appreciation to all our students who use HEART.

HEART Logo Competition

41 students entered the HEART Logo design competition. All designs are pictured below. There are a number of common themes running through our students designs:
  • most are heart shaped
  • korus have been included
  • pictures of children

Currently we are working with a graphic designer who have taken away our students thoughts on what our logo should look like and represent. Hopefully we will have a final design soon. Watch this space!
