Rational:
The school wishes to take responsible action for the protection of children while they are in our care, as over exposure to the sun can have damaging effects.
Purpose:
- To work towards a school environment which provides shade for students and staff.
- To increase student, staff and community awareness of melanoma and practical means of protection.
- To educate children and their families about the dangers of excessive exposure to the sun.
Guidelines:
- When practical and appropriate, all children will sit in the shade for lunch (Term 1 & 4).
- Melanoma awareness programmes will be part of the Health and Physical Wellbeing curriculum.
- Children will be expected to wear hats which protect the face, neck and ears when they are outside. Those without hats will be required to play in the shade.
- Staff will act as role models by wearing appropriate hats and clothing for all summer outdoor activities.
- Appropriate hats will be sold through the school shop.
- Shade provision will be considered in all future development of the grounds through planting of trees and building of shade structures.
- Children will be encouraged to use a Broad Spectrum SPF 15+ sunscreen.
- The ‘Sun Protection’ Policy will be regularly reinforced in a positive way through newsletters and school practices.
