Sun Protection Policy

Rational:

The school wishes to take responsible action for the protection of children while they are in our care, as over exposure to the sun can have damaging effects.

Purpose:

  1. To work towards a school environment which provides shade for students and staff.
  2. To increase student, staff and community awareness of melanoma and practical means of protection.
  3. To educate children and their families about the dangers of excessive exposure to the sun.

Guidelines:

  1. When practical and appropriate, all children will sit in the shade for lunch (Term 1 & 4).
  2. Melanoma awareness programmes will be part of the Health and Physical Wellbeing curriculum.
  3. Children will be expected to wear hats which protect the face, neck and ears when they are outside.  Those without hats will be required to play in the shade.
  4. Staff will act as role models by wearing appropriate hats and clothing for all summer outdoor activities.
  5. Appropriate hats will be sold through the school shop.
  6. Shade provision will be considered in all future development of the grounds through planting of trees and building of shade structures.
  7. Children will be encouraged to use a Broad Spectrum SPF 15+ sunscreen.
  8. The ‘Sun Protection’ Policy will be regularly reinforced in a positive way through newsletters and school practices.
