Road Safety Policy

Rational:

The safety of pupils is an issue that the school regards as being of critical importance and one which will not be compromised.

 Purpose:

  1. To ensure that the interests of pupils and the community are given the highest consideration at all times.
  2. To provide a clear indication to the community of the school’s position on pupils road safety.

Guidelines:

Cycling

  1. A pupil shall be eligible to cycle to school upon having attained the age of ten years.
  2. A test will be held each term for all new cyclists.
  3. Cyclists must register with the Deputy Principal before beginning to ride to school.
  4. Children under the age of 10 may bike to and from school under the supervision of an adult.
  5. In accordance with the law, children shall not ride on the footpath.

Walking to School

  1. A patrolled crossing is provided east of the school on Banks Avenue.  When possible parents will supervise pedestrian crossings on McBratneys Road and cyclist crossings on River Road after school.  Children should use these crossing points whether patrolled or not.
  2. Children should use footpaths at all times.
  3. Children should not use the river bank side of the road coming and/or going to school on Banks Avenue, Dallington Terrace, Avonside Drive or River Road, unless accompanied by an adult.

Travelling by Car

  1. Parents need to be aware of the danger of parking on the riverside of Banks Avenue and River road and to encourage all children to cross at safe places.

General:

  1. Parents should ensure that children travel to school by the safest route, making use of alternative entrances to avoid congestion, ie: Bramwell Street, Strathfield Avenue and Banks Avenue (two entrances).
  2. Children are to be encouraged to travel directly to and from school in the company of other children or an adult.
  3. It is recommended that children under eight years of age should be supervised crossing all roads and foot bridges.
  4. The use of rollerblades, skateboards, scooters etc., is discouraged as a means of transport to and from school.
  5. It is the responsibility of parents, with support from the school, to ensure that children follow safe practices in travelling to and from school.  Good role modelling is necessary to promote all aspects of Road Safety.
